WOMEN IN NUCLEAR UGANDA

Women in Nuclear Uganda Chapter Launched today to Promote Gender Equality in Nuclear Science

Hotel Africana, Kampala | 13th February, 2026

In a historic event today, the Minister of State for Mineral Development, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro officially launched the Women in Nuclear (WiN) Uganda Chapter at Hotel Africana, Kampala, bringing the four-day WiN event that started on the 10th February 2026 to an end. This event is a significant step toward fostering gender equality and encouraging women's leadership in the nuclear science and technology sectors.

The launch underscored Uganda's commitment to gender equality, human capital development, and the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for socio-economic transformation. Hon. Nyamutoro highlighted the significant role nuclear science plays in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, water management, and energy planning, bolstered through collaborations with the IAEA under the Technical Cooperation Programme — advancing these goals through capacity-building and technology transfer programs.

“The initiative is a national commitment to harness the benefits of nuclear science across various sectors,”

— Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, Minister of State for Mineral Development

Hon. Nyamutoro highlighted that the launch complements regional efforts, including educational projects aimed at increasing youth and female participation in nuclear science. She emphasized that the chapter's creation aligns with Uganda's Vision 2040, national development plans, and the IAEA's gender equality policies. The WiN Uganda Chapter will provide a platform for mentorship, professional development, and greater participation of women in nuclear technology, which is expected to inspire young girls and women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

In her closing remarks, the Minister formally declared the Women in Nuclear Uganda Chapter open, expressing confidence in its success and wishing the initiative success in its mission to drive gender diversity and innovation within the field.

The four-day event, attended by distinguished representatives from across Africa, including officials from the IAEA and leaders of WiN chapters from 20 member states, came to an official end today, marking a significant step toward advancing both Uganda's nuclear sector and the broader goal of gender equity in science and technology.
